Aug. 30, Kannywood actress Safiya Yusuf recalled how she remained out of the public eye after her n*de video was leaked in 2020.
In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, the 21-year-old actress recounted how the incident was the most depressing period of her life and she spent three months without leaving home, adding that when she finally found the courage to face the world, she faced heavy criticism and was stoned by one person in particular.
She said, “It was the most depressing period of my life, because for three months I did not go near the door of my house, I stayed at home, and when I found the energy to go out, people harassed me on the street and one person even stoned me.”
The actress then expressed her gratitude to her family and other family members who stood by her despite the scandal. Safiya also said that she was not banned from Kannywood, adding that she was just taking a break.
Safiya, popularly known as Safara’u, is known for her role in the popular series Kwana Casa’in broadcast by Arewa24.
But it was an unfortunate incident when a private video of the young actress [email protected] and went viral. While the [email protected] video is said to have been the main reason she lost her role in the series, several attempts by the actor and artists close to him to rectify the problem failed.
But she was not deterred from continuing her path as an entertainer; the actress became very active on social media and later embarked on a new career as a singer.
In her song “Kwalelenka,” she stated that she left Kannywood to sing and described the Hausa film production industry as “Sana’ar Yan Wahala,” meaning that Kannywood is nothing but a fruitless labor camp.
